Federal NDP leader announced

Avi Lewis has been elected leader of the federal New Democratic Party (NDP).

New Democrats gathered at the party's convention in Winnipeg to select their new leader.

Lewis is a journalist, activist, and now politician.

His father, Stephen Lewis, is a former leader of the Ontario New Democratic Party and his grandfather, David Lewis, led the federal New Democrats in the 1970s.

The NDP currently holds six seats in Parliament.

Lewis won the leadership with 39,734 votes. The number of votes cast was 70,934. The number of votes required to be elected is 35,466.
