City of Windsor discontinuing Transit Windsor Board

The Transit Windsor Board of Directors is being dissolved, and operations are being fully integrated into a department of the City of Windsor.

The move is not expected to change any of the day-to-day operations of the service.

All reports surrounding decision-making for transit will continue to be presented to the Environment, Transportation & Public Safety Standing Committee before going to city council for final approval.

"I just think it is going to be more streamlined. Council will have full authority and full decision-making power with respect to delivery of transit services in Windsor," said Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens.

The change will take effect on October 18, 2026, just prior to the next municipal election.

The decision to dissolve the board was not unanimous. Councillor Kieran McKenzie voiced concerns over eliminating a level of oversight.

"To me, the current model that we have where we have a transit board, and we have a director reporting to that board and people can come a delegate specifically on transit issues that fall into that agenda, that will be lost, and frankly, I think that's a step backwards," said McKenzie.

As part of the transition, Transit Windsor staff will become employees of the Corporation of the City of Windsor. They will continue to be represented by the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 616.
