The new $8.1 million East End Transit Terminal is operational.
The facility includes bus shelters, benches, bike parking, and a dedicated operator facility.
"This allows for a better overall flow," said James Chacko, Executive Director at Transit Windsor. "Buses can easily move around, being able to come on and off property; they're not congested by travelling through the Tecumseh Mall property. This is also a much bigger footprint, so it allows for more bays, allows for buses to be parked in waiting periods. Just overall, it functions much better."
All buses that previously stopped at Tecumseh Mall will now stop at the East End Terminal. This will result in slight schedule changes that can be found online.
Over 450 buses will use the terminal on a daily basis.
Infrastructure adjustments at the intersections of Catherine Street and Lauzon Parkway and at Lauzon Parkway and Tecumseh Road are expected later this fall to improve pedestrian safety.
"We've already heard a couple complaints with respect to the cycle time at the lights at Lauzon and Catherine," said Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens. "To make sure seniors can actually cross at the pedestrian crosswalk, they've asked for more time to be able to cross. We're looking at it; we're going to recalibrate those lights to make sure that is possible."
The construction of the facility was completed with $2.7 million from the federal government and $2.2 million from the provincial government.
