Windsor man confirmed dead in Lebanon

The family of a Windsor man has confirmed that their loved one has been killed in Lebanon.

Members of Mohamad Hassan Haidar's family reported that he was killed on Friday in the southern part of the country by an Israeli drone attack.

He was 38.

Global Affairs Minister Anita Anand posted about the loss on X, though she did not mention the name of the victim.

Windsor West MPP Lisa Gretzky expressed condolences on her own Facebook page.

"My thoughts are with his wife, his five children, and all those who loved him as they face an unimaginable loss," posted Gretzky. "Not a single family should ever have to endure this kind of pain. I strictly condemn the violence that continues to take innocent lives, and I join our community in mourning and calling for peace. May Hassan rest in peace."

The family held a prayer vigil on Monday outside Windsor City Hall. The video was posted on Facebook by the NCCM, a nonprofit group advocating for Muslim civic engagement.

A visibly angry Mohamad Haidar said his brother Hassan was on his horse farm in Lebanon at the time of the attack, and was helping someone who was in trouble.

"Yesterday [Sunday], we did a consolidation at one of our community centres. More than 700 people came," said Mohamad. "Isn't that an indicator of how good that person was?"

Haidar was born in Lebanon, but moved to Canada as a teenager and settled in Windsor. He was married with five children.

WindsorNewsToday.ca has reached out to Global Affairs Canada for further confirmation and details, and received a response late Monday night.

"We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones as well as to all those affected," read the statement. "Consular officials are in contact with the family to offer consular assistance. Consular services are tailored to the needs of the situation."
