Spring still the target for new bridge opening

There's still no official word on when the Gordie Howe International Bridge will open for its first travelers.

The Windsor Detroit Bridge Authority held another quarterly Public Information Centre this week to provide an update to residents.

The authority is still targeting a spring opening as it continues through its testing and commission stage.

"Making sure that our systems are working on their own, working across in an integrated way, making sure our people are trained and looking to ensure everything is running smoothly for opening day," said Chief Relations Officer Heather Grondin.

The opening delay has not affected the project's overall budget, Grondin said the contract is still for $6.4 billion.

"We will share the opening date, it may be a relatively quick turn around, we're not sure just yet," said Grondin. "We know how much people are looking forward to that date, so once we have it we'll share that as well as any expectations around crossing," said Grondin.

She said its expected that the main travel lanes and the multi-use trail will open at the same time.

Last month, the authority launched its Breakaway electronic toll payment program. To date, over 5,000 businesses and individuals have registered for the program and over 12,000 transponders have been ordered.
