A Windsor City Council committee has approved a motion to support environmental protection for a local park.
The Environment and Climate Change Advisory Committee (ECCAC) has passed a comprehensive motion to encourage collaboration of recreation opportunities and conservation at Black Oak Heritage Park.
"We want to celebrate how our community uses these spaces," said Ward 9 Councillor and committee chair Kieran McKenzie. "The goal is to find a path forward where recreation and conservation aren't at odds, but are designed to coexist through mutual respect for the land. We are committed to a conversation that acknowledges the value of outdoor activity while ensuring the park's unique ecological integrity remains intact."
The motion is good news for those who enjoy the great outdoors.
"Our mindset aligns with environmental leaders. We want this park’s ecosystem to thrive as much as anyone, and we believe that can be achieved while allowing for responsible, low-impact trail use," said James Braakman, President of the Windsor Essex Bike Community (WEBC). "We want to be clear that WEBC does not support destroying habitat or constructing new trails in the park. Our focus is on preserving what already exists and exploring how it can be managed responsibly and sustainably."
An action plan has been included in the motion, beginning with the creation of informal discussions between cycling and environmental groups.
A formal request will be sent to the entire City Council to address habitat issues, and to the legal department for a brief outlining park-use regulations.
