Four rescued from capsized boat near Gordie Howe International Bridge

Four fishermen are safe after a dramatic rescue on the Detroit River on Tuesday morning.

It happened in the river near the Gordie Howe International Bridge. Emergency dispatchers in Detroit began receiving calls at around 11 a.m. about a capsized vessel.

Detroit Fire Department spokesperson Corey McIsaac told WindsorNewsToday.ca that a fire department boat was immediately dispatched, along with Detroit police officers and paramedics. Other boaters, though, had risen to the challenge.

"Upon arrival, Good Samaritans had removed all four people, all adult males, from the water," said McIsaac. "Three were brought to shore by a fellow boater, and the fourth was transferred from a private boat to a U.S. Coast Guard boat in the river."

The men were brought back to a public boat launch at Delray Park, in the shadow of the bridge. One was checked out at a Detroit hospital for possible hypothermia, while the others refused transport to the hospital.

WindsorNewsToday.ca has also reached out to the U.S. Coast Guard for additional details.
