There's now a travel advisory for the United States for anyone planning to attend a FIFA World Cup game there.
The advisory isn't from the Government of Canada. It's from Amnesty International.
"In light of the deteriorating human rights situation in the United States and in the absence of meaningful action and concrete guarantees from FIFA, host cities, or the U.S. government, the undersigned organizations are issuing this travel advisory for fans, players, journalists, and other visitors travelling to and within the United States for the June 2026 FIFA Men's World Cup," said a release from the human rights organization.
More than 100 groups have signed on to the travel advisory, warning those going to the games they could face arbitrary denial of entry, risk of arrest and detention, invasive social media screening and searches of electronic devices, violent and unconstitutional immigration enforcement actions, suppression of speech and protest, increased surveillance, and serious risk of cruel, inhumane, or degrading treatment.
The warning even continues to point out that there is a risk of death while in immigration enforcement detention facilities or custody.
"Since the start of 2026, 17 people have died in ICE custody. In 2025, 32 people died in ICE custody," said the release. "Those being held in ICE detention have reported limited or inadequate access to legal services and essential medical care."
