The Ontario Provincial Police wants to make sure motorcyclists arrive alive as it kicks off Motorcycle Safety Week.
It starts on Friday.
"Motorcycle safety is a shared responsibility. We're encouraging riders to stay alert, ride within their limits, and ensure their bikes are in good working condition," said a release. "At the same time, other vehicle drivers must remain aware of motorcycles on the road and respect their right to share it safely."
Now that the warmer temperatures are here, police expect more motorcyclists on the road. The OPP say motorcyclists are much more vulnerable in a crash than other drivers, and many crashes involving a motorcycle are preventable.
Police recommend riders always wear a DOT-approved helmet, protective jacket, gloves, pants, and boots. Ensure your bike's brakes, lights, signals, tires, and fluids are all in good condition, and use reflective gear, keep your headlights on, and avoid riding in blind spots.
For drivers, police suggest looking twice before changing lanes or turning, allowing for extra following distance behind motorcycles, and using your signals.
Motorcycle Safety Week ends on May 7.
