Ontario marks 60th birthday of Life After Fifty with investment

A popular Seniors Active Living Centre (SALC) program in Windsor has received a piece of an investment from Queens Park as a birthday present.

Life After Fifty was the setting for the provincial announcement on Friday, which consisted of $22.8-million going to SALC programs across Ontario.

"I am so pleased to celebrate this at Life After Fifty in Windsor," said Ontario Minister of Seniors and Accessibility Raymond Cho. "In many ways, the concept of Seniors Active Living Centres all got started here."

The program, which has two Windsor locations, is one of the first SALCs in the province, founded in 1966.

"For 60 years, Life After Fifty has been proud to partner with the province of Ontario to support older adults in living active, connected, and independent lives," said Life After Fifty Executive Director Tom Wilson. "This anniversary is both a celebration of our shared history and a reminder of the importance of continued investment in programs that strengthen our communities. We are grateful for this enduring partnership and excited for the work that lies ahead."

The announcement marks the beginning of Seniors Month in Ontario, designed to celebrate the accomplishments of seniors provincewide.

Life After Fifty consists of a wide variety of programs designed to keep seniors healthy, active, and engaged in their community. They include exercise classes, hobbies, crafts, and social opportunities.

The provincial funding announced on Friday is a continuation of the $17-million funding increase in 2024, which went toward the creation of 100 new SALCs across Ontario.

There are currently 416 SALCs provincewide.

Life After Fifty is located on the main floor of the WFCU Centre, as well as on McEwan Avenue.
