The most recent concern about the spread of measles appears to have faded into the background, according to Windsor Regional Hospital (WRH).
Hospital officials provided an update on its response to measles following WRH's monthly board meeting on Thursday afternoon.
WRH Chief of Staff Doctor Wassim Saad said the hospital had been expecting an increase in cases, but that has not happened.
"Measles, obviously as an airborne viral illness, can spread very quickly through a community," said Saad. "But, thankfully, we have not seen the uptake that we were worried about initially."
Saad added that, with the weather warming up and more people getting outside, the expected increase in measles cases has not materialized.
According to Public Health Ontario, there are six exposure points being tracked in the entire province. Five of them are in Toronto, and the sixth is in Richmond Hill. There are no active exposure points in Windsor-Essex.
The 2024-2025 outbreak of measles in Ontario was declared over in October 2025, with about 2,400 cases over one year's time.
Saad said that while the hospital is always ready to handle any cases, the risk will always linger.
"We always have our usual protocols at the hospital, and airborne precautions whenever somebody is admitted and has symptoms, so a lot of our prevention and control measures at the hospital do mitigate some of that risk of spread," said Saad.
