ERCA issues pair of statements due to rainy forecast

Windsor-Essex residents could deal with both high wind gusts and soaking rain Wednesday night.

With that, the Essex Region Conservation Authority (ERCA) has issued both a flood outlook and a shoreline conditions statement.

Environment Canada forecasters had predicted between 30 and 40 millimetres of rain by early Thursday morning.

"This amount of rainfall could create ponding and areas of standing water. This rain could also cause smaller watercourses to rise, and some could spill their banks into adjacent low-lying areas," said ERCA Water Resource Engineer Sandeep Shrestha.

Wind gusts of up to 90 kilometres per hour are also possible with this system, so a shoreline conditions statement is in effect for the Lake Erie shoreline and Pelee Island.

"The areas of the region most affected by these winds are anticipated to be the shoreline area around Point Pelee National Park in the Municipality of Leamington and the west shoreline of Pelee Island in Lake Erie," said Shrestha. "Lake levels are lower compared to previous years, but there is a concern for some damage with direct wave impact on shoreline structures and debris being thrown."

Both statements are in effect through early Thursday afternoon, but may be updated as weather conditions allow.
