Innovation District unveiled in Downtown Windsor

New banners hang in downtown Windsor, highlighting the new Innovation District.

With anchors like WEtech Alliance, the Rocket Innovation Studio, University of Windsor, St. Clair College and Invest WindsorEssex the banners are meant to act as a visible sign of the growing concentration of innovation-focused businesses and organizations in the core.

The district runs along Ferry Street and onto sections of Pitt Street and Chatham Street.

"This is giving a visual identity to the growing cluster of innovation and tech companies that are coming to the core within a point five kilometer radius we have about 16 different startups, tech companies and innovation-based organisations," said Yvonne Pilon, President and CEO of WEtech Alliance.

More than creating a visual representation of the district, Pilon said the hope is to activate the space and attract more like-minded people and organizations.

"We want more tech companies to come to downtown and as we look to what's next, it's more of these events, innovation challenges, bringing conferences here, we'll be launching pop-up co-working days next month. We're trying to bring workers downtown," said Pilon.

Each light post with a banner also has a QR code at street level that allows people to read about the innovation depicted on the banner and how it connects to the region.
