Windsor police say it was only a matter of time before alleged impaired drivers would be arrested at the region's newest border crossing.
Officers arrested two allegedly high drivers at the Gordie Howe International Bridge within five hours of each other, three days after the bridge opened to the public.
The first arrest was at approximately 8 p.m. on Thursday, when Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) called Windsor officers for help with an arrest. A man had been sent to secondary inspection after agents detected a strong odour of cannabis in the vehicle.
After needing help standing, walking, and answering questions, the driver was arrested and taken to police headquarters. The 41-year-old is charged with driving while impaired by drug.
Windsor officers were called again to the Canadian point of entry at 1 a.m. on Friday. Again, a driver was sent to secondary inspection, but this time, CBSA agents found a canister of nitrous oxide in the vehicle.
The 22-year-old man was arrested after failing tests at police headquarters. He is also charged with driving while impaired by drug.
The charges have not been proven in court.
Windsor police say drug-impaired driving is becoming more of a problem.
"So far this year, the Windsor Police Service has laid 36 charges for drug-impaired driving, compared to 10 during the same period in 2025, an increase of 260 per cent," read a social media post from Windsor police. "Charges for alcohol-impaired driving have also risen during the same period, with 134 charges laid so far in 2026 compared to 85 last year, an increase of 57.6 per cent."
