Essex Fire and Rescue has introduced a new way to comfort those dealing with an emergency.
Sensory Support Kits have been rolled out to assist firefighters in helping residents with sensory overload or face communication challenges when an emergency arises.
"Every emergency is different, and every person we serve has unique needs," said Essex Fire Assistant Deputy Chief Jim Meloche. "These Sensory Support Kits will help our Firefighters provide more inclusive and compassionate care while reducing stress for individuals with sensory sensitivities and their families."
The kits consist of sensory and fidget tools, noise-reduction earmuffs, comfort items, visual supports, non-verbal communication boards, and a firefighter-themed companion plush toy.
The kits were purchased from the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council and developed in partnership with Autism Canada. They are currently installed on all fire trucks in Essex.
