The Charles Brooks Memorial Peace Fountain is set to return to Coventry Gardens in one year.
The fountain was removed in 2023 due to mechanical issues that were too costly to repair. City council approved a $11.3 million expenditure to restore the iconic riverfront attraction.
"It's fundamentally important to us. It's been 50 years; a lot of people don't realise, so to have the support of city council is absolutely astounding," said George Brooks, son of Charles Brooks.
The new floating fountain will mirror the 1978 design and include a modern water-pumping feature and programmable LED lighting.
The City of Windsor plans to unveil the new fountain on September 21, 2027, the International Day of Peace.
The International Day of Peace was established by the United Nations in 1981 as a call to non-violence, reflection and a renewed commitment to fostering peace in communities.
Charles Brooks was a passionate advocate for peace in the community and the founding President of United Auto Workers (UAW) Local 444.
