A 60-year-old man from Cottam has been charged for allegedly trying to smuggle firearm parts into Canada from the United States.
According to the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), an investigation into the man began in 2025 after charges were laid against a different man from Windsor.
He was eventually stopped at the Ambassador Bridge in May, with CBSA claiming they found unregulated firearm parts in his vehicle.
Fast forward to July, when RCMP and OPP executed multiple search warrants in Essex County. Police said they seized 53 firearms, including six illegal handguns, two unregistered submachine guns, 116 cartridge magazines, and an auto-sear, which police say can convert a semi-automatic firearm into an automatic firearm.
The man faces 10 charges, including smuggling controlled goods, import of goods without a permit, manufacturing a prohibited firearm, conspiracy to manufacture a firearm, knowingly possessing a prohibited device, knowingly possessing a prohibited firearm, storage of a non-restricted firearm contrary to regulations, storage of a restricted firearm contrary to regulations, and storage of a prohibited firearm contrary to regulations.
He is scheduled to appear in a Windsor courtroom on November 16, 2026.
