Funding to control Phragmites announced to improve wetlands, road safety, and ecosystems

The Ontario Phragmites Action Program is funding 119 projects across the province to help tackle Ontario's worst invasive species, Phragmites.

Up to 90 per cent of historic wetlands in Essex County have been lost, many overtaken by the species, which can spread fast and crowd out native flora.

Through collaboration with the OPA, partners in the county have identified where Phragmites pose the greatest risk by blocking drainage, contributing to flooding, damaging farmland, limiting access to shorelines, and creating road safety hazards.

"Wetlands and municipal drains across the Windsor-Essex County region have been decimated by invasive Phragmites," said Director of Conservation Services at the Essex Region Conservation Authority, Kevin Money. "Significant progress has already been made, and with continued support, we are confident the wetlands in Canada's most southernmost region can be restored to healthy, thriving ecosystems."

Funding this year will enable local partners and contractors to carry out targeted control efforts in priority areas. Investments are expected to deliver $113.4-million in funding across Ontario each year. The money will go towards mapping, genetic testing and direct invasive Phragmites management.

"Our experience tackling invasive Phragmites proves that together we can transform and revitalize landscapes," added Brett Norman, the director of Habitat Restoration at the Nature Conservancy of Canada. "These projects improve road safety, protect critical infrastructure, and reduce long-term maintenance costs for municipalities."

Phragmites are native to Europe and thrive in wetlands, roadside ditches, and along shorelines. Its dense stands can reach heights of up to six metres.

Last year, the Invasive Phragmites Control Fund supported 262 projects across the province.
