Windsor Fire and Rescue tackled a house fire near the downtown core at around lunchtime on Monday.
First responders were called before noon to Aylmer Avenue near Assumption Street East.
The fire was declared out within two hours, and investigators remained at the scene most of Monday afternoon to determine the cause and estimate damage.
Windsor Fire officials say five people have been displaced, and the Red Cross is working to find them a place to stay.
The cause was determined to be careless cooking, with oil left on the stove that ignited after the occupants left. No one was hurt.
Damage is estimated at $340,000.
Windsor Fire has also noted that there were no working smoke alarms or carbon monoxide detectors, and that the tenants did not carry tenant's insurance.
