Spitfires Hold Off Firebirds in Flint 2-1

Michael DiPietro knocked away 36 out of 37 Flint shots as the Windsor Spitfires beat the Firebirds on the road 2-1.

The Spits remain in second place of the OHL West Division, leading into their special game Sunday afternoon at Detroit's Joe Louis Arena against Saginaw.

The Firebirds went to the penalty box early in the opening period, and Windsor's Aaron Luchuk took advantage with his 11th goal of the year.  Flint would tie it up with six seconds left in the first period on a power play goal of their own, from Ryan Moore.  With the Firebirds holding their Teddy Bear Toss at the Dort Federal Event Center, it was decided to send the teams to the locker room for first intermission while the stuffed animals were cleared from the ice.  The six seconds would be tacked onto the beginning of the second period.

It only took 13 seconds for Windsor to get the go-ahead, and the winning goal, with Cristiano DiGiacinto finding the net for his fifth goal of the season.

The rest of the game was marked with penalties on both sides.  Windsor's Tyler Nother received a game misconduct at 14 minutes into the second on an instigating infraction.

Connor Hicks had 23 saves in goal for Flint.

The Spitfires will be the visiting team Sunday afternoon as they meet the Saginaw Spirit in their game at Joe Louis Arena.  The Detroit Red Wings are using this game to honour the junior hockey having been played at the building throughout its history.  The Wings are moving to Little Caesars Arena next season.
