The news comes after the Lions missed their chance in joining the playoffs by losing to Cincinnati in Week 16.
The Lions have missed the playoffs twice in the past three years. Detroit has also not won a playoff game since 1992 and has not won a divisional title since 1993.
Despite missing the playoffs, Caldwell has had winning seasons in three of his four years with the Lions. He will leave his position with a 36-28 record.
