After a nearly two-hour thunderstorm delay, American Josef Newgarden won Dual 1 of the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix IndyCar for Team Penske.
The first of the two races began on Saturday at 4:55 p.m. on Belle Island in Detroit.
Instead of 75 laps, the event started with a 75-minute timed race and a single-file start ending with a total of 43 laps.
Newgarden led the final 25 laps and finished nearly one second ahead of American racer Alexander Rossi with a total time of 01:15:30.59. Rossi led the race for the first 18 laps but finished second with a total time of 01:15:31.41. Japanese racer Takuma Sato passed the checkered flag third with a total time of 01:15:42.069.
It was the first Detroit win for the 28-year-old.
The green flag for Dual 2 is at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.
