The Detroit Red Wings have tied up the services of one of the club's biggest offensive threats.
The club announced Tuesday morning that it had signed forward Anthony Mantha to a four-year contract extension. Neither the Red Wings nor Mantha's agent immediately disclosed any financial terms. Mantha, 26, had been a restricted free agent.
Mantha has been one of the few bright spots for the rebuilding Wings on offence. Despite missing 28 games of the shortened 2019-2020 season with an injury, Mantha scored 16 goals for 38 points.
The native of Longueuil, Quebec scored 48 points in each of the previous two seasons, both career highs. These include 25 goals in 2018-2019, and 24 goals the season before.
Mantha also became the second player in Red Wings history to score four goals in a home opener, doing so against the Dallas Stars on October 6, 2019. The first Red Wing to accomplish this feat was John Sorrell in 1933-1934.
The Wings' first-round draft pick in 2013, Mantha scored 44 goals over three seasons with the Grand Rapids Griffons, the Wings' AHL affiliate. He also played for Team Canada at the 2019 IIHF World Championships, winning a silver medal.
Mantha's contract extension comes days after another Wings forward, Tyler Bertuzzi, was awarded a one-year, $3.5-million contract extension through an arbitrator.
