Windsor's successful Ontario Football Conference (OFC) team now has new ownership.
The St. Clair College Saints Student Athletic Association (SSAA), which had previously owned the St. Clair Fratmen, has sold the team to the college itself. With that, the team is now known as the St. Clair College Saints. It will continue to compete in the OFC for the fall 2022 season.
"The College is pleased to invest in this football team and align it into our family of varsity teams of Saints athletics at the college," said St. Clair College Vice President of International Relations, Campus Development and Student Services Ron Seguin. "Our state-of-the-art stadium, facilities and the new fan base of students, families and the community for Saints football in our first season has created a new student experience for St. Clair College."
The SSAA is a separate corporation with a board of directors, funded by student fees, and it is connected to the college by name only.
The Fratmen-turned-Saints came off a highly-successful debut season in the OFC. They finished the 2021 campaign with a 9-1 record, losing the championship game to the London Beefeaters. The team plays at Acumen Stadium on the main St. Clair College campus in Windsor, part of the school's state-of-the-art Sports Park.
The school said the demand to play football has exceeded expectations. Over 60 full-time students are projected to make the 2022 roster.
Summer practices have begun ahead of the Saints' season opener, which will take place on August 13 at Acumen Stadium. The head coach is Mike LaChance.
