Canada's women's basketball team to go to Olympics

The Canadian women's basketball team will be going to the summer 2024 Olympics.

Even though Canada fell to Japan Sunday 86-82, Hungary lost to Spain resulting in Canada going to Paris this summer.

Chatham's own Bridget Carleton led Sunday's game with 19 points and eight rebounds.

“We had a tough group. We lost two tough games to two really good teams. We fought hard, we scored a lot of points, but Japan’s really good. They’re hard to guard, they’re quick, they shoot threes really well,” said Carleton in a news release.

Additionally, Kayla Alexander had 16 points and Nirra Fields had 17 points.

" It was so exciting when we got to celebrate the moment together knowing that our dreams and our goals survive another day and that we get to represent Canada in Paris 2024." said Canadian forward Natalie Achonwa.

This is Canada's fourth time qualifying for the Olympics and is the first time since 2000 that both the men's and women's teams have qualified.

"We will prepare. We will work. We will once again dive into the commitment that it is to represent Canada. I am so thrilled to have the opportunity, once again, to wear the Canada jersey across my chest.” said Achonwa.
