South African takes Rocket Classic for first PGA Tour win

A 20-year-old from South Africa notched his first PGA Tour win in the Motor City on Sunday.

Aldrich Potgeiter needed five playoff holes to win the 2025 Rocket Classic Sunday at the Detroit Golf Club in Detroit. He sealed it with an 18-foot birdie to break the tie with American Max Greyserman.

American Chris Kirk was eliminated on the second playoff hole. All three players were unable to sink the winning put on the 18th green to close out regulation.

Potgeiter, from Pretoria, moved to Australia with his family at age eight, but after the COVID-19 pandemic put a crimp in playing opportunities, moved back to South Africa at 17.

"We had to give up a lot, moving to Australia, moving back," said Potgeiter, according to ESPN. "Emigrating is definitely not the easiest thing. Coming alone at the start of my career to the States and giving it a grind, and having my dad here has helped so much."

Potgeiter is currently the youngest player on the PGA Tour. His only other professional win was on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2024, at The Bahamas Great Abaco Classic. He won the 2022 British Amateur Open at Royal Lytham & St Annes.

The Rocket Classic completed its seventh year at the Detroit Golf Club on Sunday and is the only tournament in PGA history to be played yearly within the Detroit city limits.

The Detroit Free Press reported on Sunday that the 2026 Rocket Classic will shift to the last weekend in July, following the British Open.
