Addressing Antimicrobial Concerns In Livestock At Research Level

Canada's major beef research funders have agreed to focus on a number of priority research outcomes dealing with the use of antimicrobials in livestock.

The priorities are laid out in the National Beef Antimicrobial Research Strategy, developed by the Beef Cattle Research Council and the National Beef Value Chain Roundtable.

Council Chair Tim Oleksyn says the strategy will help ensure every research dollar helps make progress in addressing human health and public confidence concerns while also ensuring animal welfare and industry sustainability.

The strategy lays out priorities and outcomes on antimicrobial resistance, antimicrobial use and antibiotic alternatives.

Oleksyn says research will play a critical role in the beef industry's ability to reduce the use of medically-important antimicrobials.

He says it will also help develop, identify and implement effective, responsible alternatives to antimicrobials.
