New App To Save Lives

In the age of technological advances, a new app and web registry will be launched in Chatham-Kent to help residents find a nearby defibrillator in the case of an emergency.

Chatham-Kent Fire and Emergency Services and Chatham-Kent EMS are launching a PulsePoint web registry and PulsePoint AED app, to help residents find the closest AED unit (automated external defibrillator).

As stated in a media release, in the event of cardiac arrest, a person can use the app to find where the closest defibrillator is, in case it needs to be used before paramedics arrive on scene. Dispatchers will stay on the phone with a caller to direct them on how to use an AED unit and continue rescue efforts -- such as CPR -- until paramedics arrive.

"Citizens can help even before a life is in danger by easily identifying public access AEDs throughout your community,” says Scott Ramey, assistant chief for Chatham-Kent EMS. "Their direct participation can help create greater location awareness and mindfulness of the important role AEDs play in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest survival."

The registry can be found by visiting ckfes.ca/AED. The app can be downloaded through the app store on most cell phones.

In addition, there will be a demonstration and unveiling of the first new municipal building AED site, at Park Avenue Business Centre on 25 Creek Rd. in Chatham. The demonstration is scheduled for 2pm on May 31.
