Bantam Cougars Competing For Provincial Title

The Bantam Chatham-Kent Cougars football team is heading to Peterborough this weekend with the goal of bringing home a provincial championship.

The Cougars will be taking on the Vaughan Rebels after a big 21-2 win in the divisional final against Brantford last weekend.

Cougars head Coach Scott Barko says even though the two teams haven't played each other yet this season, some of the Cougars coaches did get a chance to scout out the Rebels recently.

"They are a good team, I don't anticipate this being a walk in the park," says Barko. "They've got some weapons that we will have to deal with and we're going to spend this week getting the boys ready for that and building up their confidence."

Two key areas of improvement for the Cougars following their win in the division championship will be tackling and catching.

"There was a little bit there -- we allowed [Brantford] to move the ball on us a little bit, so we're going to be focusing on that," says Barko. "And catching the football -- we had a lot of dropped passes on Saturday and I feel like we could have put up a few more points."

Barko says those are minor criticisms, though, adding the team will only require some fine-tuning ahead of the championship game.

He also praised the boys for the heart and determination they have shown all season.

"They're committed -- and that was our big focus this year," says Barko. "The boys are loving the game and they're having fun playing -- I think that's our strength right now."

The championship game will take place at Thomas A Stewart Field in Peterborough on Saturday.

Kick-off is set for 11am.
