Failing to sign in leads to arrest

Chatham-Kent police have arrested an 18-year-old Chatham man after he allegedly failed to sign in at police headquarters two weeks in a row.

Police said the man was released from court back on September 28 with several conditions, including one that required him to sign in at police headquarters every Thursday.

Officers said the man skipped those sign-ins on November 29 and December 6, so when police caught up with him Wednesday night, they arrested him.

He's now charged with failing to comply with his release conditions and has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Watch for wildlife, but don't veer for deer

Chatham-Kent police are issuing another reminder to drivers to keep an eye out for wildlife on the roads.

This time, their warning is backed by a pair of collisions involving deer that both took place in the morning hours this week.

Officers said a driver swerved to miss a deer on River Line Wednesday morning and lost control of his vehicle. In that case, a 17-year-old Dresden teen was in the vehicle, but he was not physically hurt.

In the second case, a driver hit a deer on Kent Bridge Road early Thursday morning. A 79-year-old Blenheim woman was in the vehicle at the time, but she wasn't hurt, either.

Police are offering the following safety tips as a result of the crashes:

- Watch your Speed - sometimes collisions can be avoided if you have time to slow down

- Scan the Road – scanning ahead for animals may help you see them before they cross your path – watch for their reflective eyes and use your high beam headlights when possible

- Slow Down don’t Swerve – if an animal is on the road, brake gently to slow down – do not swerve or make sudden movements to avoid them as it is important that your reaction to avoid wildlife does not endanger yourself or other drivers on the road.
