Police briefs - Monday, December 31, 2018

A 31-year-old Chatham man is facing several charges after allegedly pointing a shotgun at someone's head during a domestic dispute.

Chatham-Kent police said an argument between two people turned physical Sunday night. A Chatham man allegedly pointed a gun at someone while threatening them. He left the residence with the shotgun but eventually returned, at which time officers were able to make an arrest.

The victim was treated for minor injuries.

The 31-year-old is charged with pointing a firearm, three counts of assault, two counts of uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, occupant of a motor vehicle knowing there was a firearm, unauthorized possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm, unauthorized possession of a weapon, handle firearm/weapon or prohibited device in a careless manner, and careless storage of a firearm.

Several charges have been laid after a stolen vehicle went up in flames.

Police said a 21-year-old man from Tilbury went to a residence on Winterline Road Sunday morning to use their phone. He claimed that his truck had broken down and needed to call for a cab. Shortly after he left, the resident noticed that the truck was on fire.

Fire crews were able to put out the flames. Officers later found out that the truck had been reported stolen from Kingsville, and had two sets of stolen licenses plates.

Officers found the suspect at a Tim Hortons location and were able to make an arrest following a short chase. However, during that chase, the suspect allegedly dropped items that were reported stolen from a home on Belle Rose Line.

The 21-year-old has since been charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000, two counts of possession of stolen property under $5,000, arson, theft, and eight counts of failing to comply with a probation order.

No impaired drivers were found during RIDE spot checks in Chatham-Kent Sunday night.

Officers set up checkpoints in Tilbury, Wheatley, and Ridgetown. Of the 219 vehicles stopped, two roadside tests were done. Although a few warnings were given to drivers, officers said no one was found to be impaired by drugs or alcohol.

Police are reminding residents to use available services this New Year's Eve to get a safe ride home.
