Flashlights give away break-in suspects

An observant citizen helped officers stop an active break-in in Chatham.

Police were called to a vacant house on McNaughton Avenue East around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday after a resident reported seeing two people inside the house with flashlights.

During a search, police arrested a 45-year-old Chatham man and the 24-year-old Chatham woman. The two have since been charged with break and enter.

Woman charged with drug-related offences

A 31-year-old woman from Walpole Island is facing charges after being stopped by police in Chatham early Thursday morning.

Police said a vehicle was stopped around 2 a.m. on Grant Street at Grand Avenue. The 31-year-old was charged with driving while under suspension. However, during a search of the vehicle, police allegedly found drugs. The woman is now also charged with two counts of possession of a schedule I substance and possession for the purpose of trafficking.

She has been released from police custody with a future court date.

Chatham woman found hiding in cellar

A Chatham woman who was found in a cellar has been charged with being unlawfully in a dwelling.

Police said a homeowner noticed Wednesday morning that their cellar door had been opened and an unknown person could be seen inside. Police were called to the house on Creek Road in Chatham around 7:30 a.m.

Officers arrived and arrested a 32-year-old woman. She has been released from police custody with a future court date. ------------

Drivers stopped in safety zone

Chatham-Kent police are reminding drivers to slow down -- especially in community safety zones.

The traffic unit set up post on Murray Street on Wednesday. Police said in just under two hours, 27 tickets were issued.
