Heat warning expected to stick around

The first heat wave of the season is here and the hotter-than-normal temperatures are expected to hang around throughout the Canada Day long weekend.

Environment Canada issued a heat warning for Chatham-Kent and Windsor-Essex Thursday morning and another on Sunday afternoon.

Environment Canada is predicting that the warm and humid weather will likely continue well into Canada Day until the weekend.

Forecasters said hot and humid air will move in and stick around for the next three to five days, with temperatures expected to reach highs of 31 C in the afternoons while overnight lows only drop down to about 21 C.

Maximum humidex values throughout the week are expected to be near 40 C. Scattered showers and thunderstoms are also possible throughout the week which may lessen the daytimes high reaching 30.

Residents are encouraged to drink a lot of water and stay cool during this heat wave while also keeping a close eye on elderly residents and young kids. Pet owners are also reminded to not leave animals inside of hot vehicles at all and to monitor their pets when they are outside.

Officials with the Public Health Unit have issued a reminder that symptoms of heat-related illnesses may include confusion, dizziness, or vomiting. Further information can be found here.
