Record jump in London-area COVID-19 cases

A significant spike in new COVID-19 cases was reported on Sunday afternoon by London-Middlesex health officials.

The Middlesex-London Health Unit announced 37 additional cases. This marks a record high for the number of single-day new cases of the virus in the region. The previous record of 27 was reported on Friday.

The latest jump in cases brings the total COVID-19 case count in the London-area to 1,248. Of the total cases, 29 are linked to school settings, 145 are from long-term care homes and 77 are from retirement homes. Currently, eight schools in the region have one or more active cases of the virus.

The main cause of transmission in London-Middlesex has been through contact with a confirmed source, which accounts for 32 per cent of all cases. Twenty-nine per cent of cases were caught through an outbreak, 26 per cent of cases have no known link, seven per cent are from travel and 3.8 per cent are undetermined or pending.

There were also seven more recoveries reported on Sunday, bringing the number of individuals who have recovered from the virus in the region to 1,073.

Southwestern Public Health, the health unit covering St. Thomas, Woodstock and Elgin and Oxford counties, reported just two new COVID-19 cases over the past 24 hours.

Across the province, it was also a record-setting day. Ontario health officials reported 1,328 new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, marking the second day in a row that a record number of new daily cases were recorded.
