Suspects take off with light pole

Chatham-Kent Crime Stoppers is asking for tips from the public in connection to a theft that wasn't exactly energy efficient.

A 20-foot aluminum light pole was reported stolen from the Entegrus lot on Queen Street in Chatham.

Crime Stoppers said two suspects broke into a fenced compound on Saturday at approximately 7:30 p.m. After going through a dumpster, the suspects allegedly took off with a light pole worth an estimated $600.

Traffic stop results in drug charges

A Chatham man caught behind the wheel when he shouldn't have been is also facing drug-related charges.

An officer stopped a vehicle on Monday after seeing the driver "known to him as being unlicensed." A 37-year-old Chatham man was arrested but during a search, police also seized suspected crystal methamphetamine and a large knife in a sheath on his belt.

Police said the 37-year-old was under several court-ordered conditions, one of which was to not possess any weapons.

He was charged with drug possession, two counts of driving while under suspension and failing to comply with his release conditions. The vehicle he was driving at the time was also impounded for seven days.

Alleged shoplifter arrested at home

A 26-year-old woman is facing a couple of charges after she allegedly stole a cart-full of items from Giant Tiger on Grand Avenue in Chatham.

Police said she left the store Monday afternoon without paying for approximately $125 worth of items. She left in a car that was waiting outside of the store.

Officers were able to identify the woman and found her at her home. She was arrested and charged with theft under $5,000 and being in possession of property obtained by a crime under $5,000. The stolen items were returned to the store. -----------

Dangling licence plate tips off police

A Chatham driver will not have a vehicle for the next week after he was stopped by police on Monday.

A driver was pulled over after an officer saw a licence plate falling off of the vehicle but the officer later learned that there were two different plates attached to the vehicle. It's also alleged the man was suspended from driving for unpaid fines and remedial measures.

Police said a 42-year-old man was charged with two counts of driving while under suspension, two counts of plates not authorized for the vehicle, and operating a vehicle with no insurance. In addition to the charges, his vehicle was towed to an impound lot where it will remain for seven days. The 42-year-old will have to go to Provincial Offences Court on January 6, 2021. ------------

Car reported stolen

Police are asking for help from the public in identifying a suspect in connection with a theft.

A red 2015 Hyundai Elantra was reported stolen on Monday afternoon from Hinnegan-Peseski Funeral Home on William Street. The car was last seen with Ontario licence plates BWNR 790.

Mischief reported in Chatham

Chatham-Kent police are investigating after a wooden sculpture in front of a business on Sixth Street was damaged.

Police said damage is estimated at $1,000 after an incident happened between Saturday afternoon and Monday afternoon.

Chatham thefts reported

Police are investigating a couple of unrelated thefts in Chatham.

Sometime between Sunday night and Monday morning, someone broke into a garage on Joseph Street and stole some power tools. Police said the stolen items are worth about $2,500.

In a separate case, officers said attachments for a skid steer from Riegling Trucking on Colborne Street were stolen. The attachments were a large broom and breaker. The theft reportedly happened sometime between November 25 and November 27.

Wanted people arrested

A couple of people in Chatham have been arrested on warrants.

Police said a 32-year-old wanted for failing to attend court to provide a DNA sample was arrested on Monday after he was found on Wellington Street. He was released from police custody with a future court date scheduled for December 23.

Meanwhile, A 48-year-old woman wanted in connection with two thefts and a shoplifting incident was arrested on Harvey Street early Tuesday morning.
