Footprints in the snow lead police to suspect

A 33-year-old Chatham man has been arrested after police followed some fresh footprints he had left in the snow.

Chatham-Kent police said they found him hiding behind a tree early Thursday morning after they received a call about a disturbance at a motel in Chatham.

According to police, the man had allegedly assaulted a woman in a room at the motel -- even though he had previously been banned from associating with her.

Officers said the man took off before police arrived, but they were able to find him by following his footprints.

Police said while they were searching him, they allegedly found some crystal mehtamphetamine in his possession as well.

The accused was charged with assault, drug possession, two counts of breaching his probation and four counts of failing to comply with his release conditions. He was taken into custody pending a bail hearing.

Man accused of pretending to be police officer at the door

A 54-year-old Chatham man is facing a handful of charges after he allegedly assaulted his girlfriend and then pushed his way into her home before taking her cell phone.

Police said they were first notified of the offences Wednesday morning. At that time, officers were called to a residence in Blenheim where they learned that a man had assaulted and threatened his girlfriend while they were in her vehicle.

Officers said the woman was able to get away and returned home.

Early Thursday morning, the man then allegedly showed up at the woman's home and identified himself as a police officer in order to get her attention.

Police said once she had opened the door, though, the man pushed his way into the apartment, was physical again with the woman and stole her cell phone.

Officers caught up with him a short time later and arrested him -- they also allegedly found some suspected methamphetamine on him at the time.

He was charged with assault, uttering threats, impersonating a police officer, robbery, and drug possession. He was taken into custody pending a bail hearing, and is now set to be released on December 18, 2020.

Impaired driving charges laid after crash in Chatham

A 20-year-old Windsor man is facing some impaired driving-related charges after he was involved in a two-vehicle crash in Chatham Wednesday night.

Chatham-Kent police said the man was driving one of the vehicles involved in the crash, which took place at around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Investigators believed the driver at fault was driving under the influence of alcohol and he failed a roadside breath test, so he was taken back to police headquarters for further testing.

The accused was later charged with having a blood-alcohol content over the legal limit, being a novice driver with a blood-alcohol content above zero, and driving with alcohol readily available.

He was later released pending a future court date, but his vehicle was towed from the scene and taken away for seven days.

Two arrests on outstanding warrants

The law has caught up with a 31-year-old Walpole Island man and a 34-year-old London man who were both wanted by Chatham-Kent police.

Officers arrested the Walpole Island man on James Street in Wallaceburg Wednesday morning -- he was wanted on several outstanding warrants and was taken into custody pending a bail hearing.

The London man was arrested in London Wednesday night and charged with uttering threats and forcible confinement -- he was wanted in connection with a domestic dispute that took place in Blenheim earlier this week.

Charges laid after three separate crashes

A trio of drivers are facing charges in connection with three separate crashes in Chatham-Kent that all took place Wednesday afternoon and evening.
