A significant spike in new COVID-19 cases was reported on Saturday afternoon by London-Middlesex health officials.
The Middlesex-London Health Unit announced 87 additional cases and four new deaths. This marks a record high for the number of single-day new cases of the virus in the region. The previous record of 67 cases was reported on Friday.
All of the latest deaths were women, two of which were in their 90s, one in her 80s and one in her 70s. One of the women in her 90s was associated was from a long-term care home, while the others had no association with a retirement or long-term care home. Eighty-six people have passed away from the virus so far in the region.
The latest cases bring the total COVID-19 case count in the London-area to 2,409. Of the total cases, 100 are linked to school settings, 180 are from long-term care homes and 79 are from retirement homes.

The main cause of transmission in London-Middlesex has been through contact with a confirmed source, which accounts for 40 per cent of all cases. Twenty-seven per cent of cases were caught through an outbreak, 22 per cent of cases have no known link, 5 per cent are from travel and 5 per cent are undetermined or pending.
There were also 23 more recoveries reported on Saturday, bringing the number of individuals who have recovered from the virus in the region to 1,898.
Southwestern Public Health, the health unit covering St. Thomas, Woodstock and Elgin and Oxford counties, reported 31 new cases on Saturday.
Across the province, Ontario health officials reported 2,357 new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday, marking the fifth day in a row that over 2,000 new daily cases were recorded.
