Chatham woman loses over $38K to scammer

Chatham-Kent police are issuing a warning and an appeal for tips as they investigate a fraud complaint that someone made to a local bank this week.

Police said their investigation showed that earlier this year, a Chatham woman had received an error message on her computer that she believed was from Microsoft.

Officers said the she contacted someone about it -- who claimed to be a Microsoft employee -- in an effort to fix her computer.

Police said the man then advised the woman that while he was "fixing" her computer, he "accidentally" deposited some cash into her bank account.

Investigators said the man then instructed the woman to repay him the money in increments of $3,000 to $5,000 cash, adding that he would attend her home to retrieve it. In total, the man allegedly defrauded the woman of over $38,000.

Police said the suspect is described as a non-white man with a dark complexion, in his mid to late 20's, and approximately six feet tall with black wavy hair. Officers said he was always wearing a mask and was last seen driving a grey SUV.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Constable Kevin Brown at kevinb@chatham-kent.ca or 519-436-6600 mailbox #6880. You can also submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) and may be eligible for a cash reward.

Police are taking the opportunity to remind local residents that the best way to protect yourself from scammers is to educate yourself.

Officers said scammers often "use intimidation tactics and want to pressure you into providing information and making decision quickly," adding that if you get a suspicious call, you should take the time to do you research before you take any action.
