West Nile Virus detected in mosquitoes in Chatham

Health officials in Chatham-Kent have confirmed mosquitoes collected from a trap last week have tested positive for West Nile Virus.

Chatham-Kent Public Health announced the discovery on Monday after it received laboratory confirmation from insects that were gathered in north Chatham on August 24. This marks the first West Nile Virus-positive mosquito trap found in Chatham-Kent this year.

West Nile Virus is transmitted to people from a bite of an infected mosquito. Most people infected with the virus have no symptoms or will have minor flu-like effects such as fever, headache, body aches and fatigue. In rare cases, sick individuals may experience more severe symptoms such as stiff neck, nausea, difficulty swallowing, vomiting, lack of coordination or paralysis.

If you suspect you may have contracted West Nile Virus, seek medical attention immediately. Those with compromised immune systems are at a higher risk of serious illness.

The health unit is advising the community to protect themselves by wearing light-coloured, long-sleeved clothing, long pants and socks. Using repellents containing DEET, staying indoors during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active, and ensuring all doors and window screens are tight and free of holes.

Additionally, CK Public Health is urging residents to check their properties and eliminate all sources of standing water to prevent mosquitoes from breeding.

More information on West Nile Virus can be found on the government of Canada's website.
