Local COVID caseload expected to continue upward trend

Lambton's medical officer of health is advising residents to brace for a continued spike in COVID-19 cases.

There were 15 more confirmed infections reported in Sarnia-Lambton Tuesday.

Lambton Public Health reported the caseload since the start of the pandemic had risen to 4,532.

The number of resolved cases increased by 10 to 4,372, putting the number of active infections at 82, up by five.

Dr. Sudit Ranade told Sue Storr on CHOK (103.9FM/1070AM) Tuesday morning that the upward trend is expected to continue.

"This is just early days of what we are going to be seeing with this whole Omicron thing," said Dr. Ranade. "Still learning about it, I'm still checking in to what other people are saying, what other countries are saying, what the science table is going to say, all of those kinds of things. But, it is looking like there are going to be days very shortly from here, where 17 cases a day will seem like a dream."

There are five active outbreaks, and the death toll is unchanged at 78.

There are 10 COVID-positive patients at Bluewater Health, up from eight on Monday.

To date, none of the confirmed cases locally have been identified as the Omicron variant, however Dr. Ranade said it's safe to assume it is in the community.
