A possible Listeria contamination has prompted a recall of nearly two dozen kinds of Fresh Express salad kits.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) announced the recall by Fresh Express Incorporated. The company has recalled 23 varieties of its salad kits in different sized packages that bear the lot code beginning with "Z324" through "Z350". The product was sold in Ontario, Manitoba and possibly nationally.
Anyone with the salad kits in their refrigerator is advised not to eat it and should either toss it into the garbage or return it to the store where it was purchased.
Food contaminated with Listeria may not look or smell spoiled, but can still make you sick, according to the CFIA. Symptoms of Listeria infection include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache, and neck stiffness. Pregnant women, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk.
There have been no reported illnesses linked to the recalled salad kits.
The CFIA is now conducting a food safety investigation, which may lead to the recall of other products.
