Masks no longer required on Ride CK vehicles

Face masks are no longer mandatory on Ride CK vehicles.

The change to local public transit mask rules went into effect on Saturday at 12:01 a.m. to coincide with new provincial rules.

However, the Municipality of Chatham-Kent still recommends the use of masks when in vehicles and while waiting at bus stops, particularly for individuals at higher risk of severe illness and those who have not received all recommended doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.

"We request all riders be respectful of individuals making a personal choice based on one's individual risk assessment that will consider their own health status," said Ride CK in a statement on Friday afternoon. "Individuals are encouraged to wear a tight-fitting, well-constructed mask if they feel it is the right choice for them."

Ride CK said vehicle operators will continue to wear masks when securing mobility devices within the vehicle. Vehicle operators on specialized transit services will also continue to wear masks until further notice.

Meanwhile, the Beach Bus is not operating this year.

Transit Spokesperson Ian Clark said the Beach Bus was removed from the budget after the 2019 season due to low ridership.

Council funded a reduced version last year for one season only, but Clark said the bus was not funded again for this season.

The Beach Bus provided service between Mitchell’s Bay and Erieau.
