Chatham-Kent residents will be lacing up their shoes across the municipality this weekend to support cancer research.
There are several Terry Fox Runs taking place on Sunday locally, including in-person runs in Wallaceburg, Dresden, Blenheim, and Tilbury.
Chatham and Ridgetown will be holding virtual events this year and accepting donations online.
Dresden Terry Fox Run organizer Meg Robinson said the town is ready for another big donation drive this year after collecting over $50,000 during last year's event.
"Our town is fantastic, we have pulled up some amazing numbers, even the last few years with the pandemic, we have raised some awesome funds," said Robinson, adding they have been preparing for this weekend for a long time already. "We started months ago with some BBQs at Rotary Park."
Even though the 2020 run was virtual, Dresden still ranked number one in the province for per capita fundraising, which is based on how much money is raised compared to the size of the population.
This year's run is on the same track. At last check, over 200 people were registered for the Dresden event and had already raised over $16,000.
The Dresden Volunteer Firefighters Association will look to add to that total by holding a Friday Nite Lite Bite hot dog and french fries fundraiser event at the Dresden Legion Branch 113 on St. George Street. That event runs from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, September 16.
Anyone interested in participating in the Terry Fox Run in Dresden is encouraged to register ahead of time, but Robinson said you can also just show up the day of the event.
Dresden's run will start at 10 a.m. on Sunday, September 18 at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 113 on St. George Street.
The event in Blenheim will take place at Blenheim Memorial Park/Arena on Sunday with registration at 8:30 a.m. and a start time of 10 a.m.
Tilbury's run will start at the Tilbury Arena with registration starting at 11 a.m. Sunday and opening ceremonies at 12 p.m. The run is set to start at 12:30 p.m.
Wallaceburg's run will start at Civic Square Park on James Street with registration at 9 a.m. Sunday and a start time of 10 a.m.
