A former employee being sued by the United Way of Chatham-Kent for allegedly misappropriating funds has been identified in court documents.
CK News Today has learned the local United Way is suing Veronica Whittal for nearly $300,000. Court documents filed in Ontario Superior Court this week showed the United Way is trying to recover $292,614.27.
Whittal held various positions at the agency, including Coordinator of Finance and Administration.
In a news release issued on Monday afternoon, the organization said the matter was thoroughly investigated and the employee named in the civil action is no longer with the organization.
The organization also said it has strengthened security protocols to prevent the opportunity for any future incidents.
"UWOCK is troubled by the alleged misconduct of the former employee named in its civil action," the news release said.
Chatham-Kent police are investigating and criminal charges could be laid.
The United Way thanked Barb Palace, the former chief executive officer, for bringing the matter to its attention and helping with the internal investigation.
"We thank our supporters for their continued and unwavering commitment to our mission," the release added.
