OPP hope Operation Impact helps keep roads safe this long weekend

The 278 lives lost on roadways patrolled by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) this year is something the OPP wants every driver to consider before venturing out on crowded highways over the Thanksgiving holiday.

OPP officers will spend the weekend focusing on dangerous behaviors like speeding, alcohol or drug-impaired driving, and distracted driving. Police warn risky driving could deprive more families of their loved ones. So officers hope to see no violations during the OPP Operation Impact Campaign over the long weekend.

"As the OPP joins Canadian policing partners to keep roadways safe during the annual Operation Impact campaign, drivers are reminded that safe driving and good decisions are the single most important component in surviving the long weekend without losing any more lives," the OPP said in a statement issued this week. "Passengers who use their seatbelts can also help to reduce road fatalities."

The OPP Provincial Traffic Safety Strategy aims to reduce deaths and injuries on roads, waterways and trails. The OPP has responded to nearly 55,000 motor vehicle collisions so far this year. Operation Impact runs from October 6 to October 9.
