Polar Plunge to make a splash in Chatham this weekend

Close to 200 people will be "Freezin' For A Reason" at Sons of Kent on Saturday.

They're going to jump into a pool of ice-cold water for the 7th Annual Polar Plunge to raise money for Special Olympics Ontario.

Organizer and Chatham-Kent Police Sergeant Jason Herder said this year's event is extra special.

"It's going to be one of our premiere fundraising events for the 2024 Special Olympics School Championship Games, which will be the return of the Special Olympic Games to Chatham-Kent for the first time in 27 years" said Herder. "We're really excited for the games coming. We're really excited for this event, and the fundraising efforts. One hundred per cent of what we raise goes right back to those games this year."

As of Friday morning, the local fundraiser had already eclipsed its $50,000 goal. Last year, they raised a record-setting $104,370.

There are two plunges scheduled, one at 2 p.m. and another at 6 p.m. Herder added that everyone is invited to come out and watch.

"We've got a live band playing in between the two plunges. We've got food trucks that are going to be on site, hot drinks as well. The goal is to make it a large, full, family-friendly day out in the cold, supporting Special Olympics," he said.

It's not too late to participate. You can register in advance or in-person the day of for $40, or raise $100 to have the registration fee waived.
