Highway 401 re-opens in Chatham after transport truck rollover

There is no word on charges yet, but provincial police have re-opened all lanes of the eastbound Highway 401 through Chatham-Kent after a rollover crash early Thursday morning.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) with the Chatham detachment were called to an area of the Highway 401 near the Dillon Road overpass at around 6 a.m. Thursday after a transport truck rolled over, blocking the eastbound lanes.

Constable Brett Phair said the truck "briefly entered the centre median and then rolled over onto the travelled portion of the eastbound Highway 401."

OPP said there were two people inside the vehicle, adding that the driver and the passenger of the transport truck were taken to a local hospital with minor, non-life threatening injuries as a result of the crash.

The collision also prompted police to shut down the eastbound lanes of the Highway 401 between Tilbury and Chatham for several hours for the investigation and so that they could safely remove the vehicle that rolled over.

OPP sent out a note shortly before 10 a.m. Thursday saying that the road had since re-opened.

Police also issued a reminder to drivers to give their full and undivided attention to the road at all times and to always be aware of changing weather, traffic, and road conditions.

"We noticed this morning that with the collision -- after emergency crews arrived on scene and the individuals were being taken care of -- people were slowing down and even stopping in live lanes to take photographs," said Constable Phair. "We obviously need everyone to slow down and proceed with caution when passing an accident scene, but certainly do not stop in a live lane of traffic -- the last thing we need is another collision to happen."
