Jr. B Playoff Hockey Wrap Up - March 4, 2017

Blake Bain scored late in the overtime period as the Leamington Flyers beat the Sarnia Legionnaries 3-2 in Game 2 of their Junior B playoff series.

The Flyers now have a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.

The Legionnaires scored first, on a goal from Joey Zappa.  It would be the only goal scored in the frame, and the Flyers killed off two Legionnaires power plays.

Zach Gilbeault tied it up for Sarnia with the only goal in the second period, which came on the power play soon after the midway point of the frame.  In the third period, Gilbeault helped the Legionnaires take the lead with another power play goal at 14:47.  Leamington knotted the score at two-all two minutes later on a power play tally from Derrick Johnson.  With that, the game was tied at the end of regulation.

Bain picked up the game winner at the 4:20 mark of the extra period.

Noah Hedrick had 32 saves in goal for the Flyers, while Sarnia's Jorgen Johnson stopped 21 shots.

Game 3 is Sunday night in Leamington.  Puck drops at 7pm and the game can be heard on CHOK FM 103.9/AM 1070 in Sarnia.

Brett Primeau scored two power play goals as the LaSalle Vipers beat the Rockets in Strathroy 5-3.

The top-seeded Vipers improve to a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven playoff series, with Game 3 at the Vollmer Complex Sunday night at 8.

Brady Hogg got the Rockets on the board first in the first period.  Jack Bowler tied it up for the Vipers on the power play to make the score 1-1 after one stanza.

Nathan Savage gave LaSalle the lead for the first time soon after the start of the second period, also on the power play.  Strathroy responded a short time later with a Michael Wood goal.  It would not be long after that when the Vipers regained the lead on a score from Manny Silverio.

Shortly before the 16-minute mark of the middle frame, Primeau picked up another power play goal for LaSalle to extend the lead to 4-2, though Strathroy got a goal back before the intermission thanks to a shorthanded lamplighter from Cody Schneider.

Primeau got his second goal with ten seconds left in the game, on the power play and against an empty net.

Eli Billing stopped 39 shots in goal for LaSalle, while Strathroy goaltender Zach Weir had 49 saves.

The London Nationals did all their scoring in the third period, in their 3-0 shutout of the St. Marys Lincolns in Game 3 of their junior B series.

The first two periods of the game were a defensive battle between the combatants.  The Nationals had two power-play chances in the opening frame while the Lincolns had two with neither capitalizing.   The second period also passed without a goal but tempers flared between the two teams about halfway through the frame.  London's Ian McKinnon and St. Marys' Eric Gibb each got a fighting major and an early shower for their efforts.

The stalemate was finally broken by the Nationals in the third period when Ethan Nother scored at 5:11 in.  London doubled the lead just over a minute later on a Connor Schmalz goal, and Connor Brookshaw sealed it with an empty-netter at 31 seconds before the end of regulation.

Cameron Zanussi notched the shutout for London, stopping all 26 St. Marys shots.  Jordan Kooy faced 41 shots in net for the Lincolns, turning away 39 of them.

Game 4 of the best-of-seven series is Tuesday night at St. Marys.
