New Bus Route To Conservation Area, Pioneer Village

There's a new bus route in town and this one unlocks a world of fishing, canoeing, picnicking, hiking, and camping for many Londoners.

The route, named the Fanshawe Getaway, was announced on Tuesday. It will offer seasonal service to Fanshawe Pioneer Village and the Fanshawe Conservation area on weekends and statutory holidays.

“The introduction of this service will provide greater access for many Londoners to enjoy signature family, heritage, recreational and ecological attractions from Canada Day until Doors Open and Culture Days,” says Chris Campbell, director of culture and entertainment tourism at Tourism London.

The cost of the pilot project will be split between the London Transit Commission, Tourism London, The Fanshawe Pioneer Village, and the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority.

"Pursuing public accessibility initiatives to serve all audiences is a primary goal of Fanshawe Pioneer Village's new Strategic Plan,” says Shanna Dunlop, executive director & curator at Fanshawe Pioneer Village. “With this pilot program we have taken an important first step towards inclusion and ensuring that those who rely on public transit have a means to visit our Village."

Another big draw of the new route is the conservation authority's recreational activities .

"We hope many Londoners take this opportunity to step into nature. Fanshawe Conservation Area offers great opportunities for picnicking, fishing, canoe and kayak rentals, hiking, biking, beach volleyball, camping, special events, or just relaxing with a view over the lake," says Ray Chowen, vice-chair of the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority.

The Fanshawe Getaway bus route will run from July 1 to October 2.
