Huron University College in London is offering a $50,000 scholarship for an academically eligible "dreamer" affected by recent immigration policy changes by U.S. President Donald Trump.
"Huron is an institution that cares about the world we live in, and this is why we feel it is important to ensure that every student, regardless of race, identity, or background, has an equal opportunity to thrive," the college said in a statement.
The Western University affiliated college announced the scholarship in light of the Trump administration's recent decision to rescind the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA), which gave rights to certain illegal immigrants, known as "dreamers", who entered the country as minors.
Around 800,000 "dreamers" will face possible deportation if the U.S. Congress can't find a solution within a six month deadline set by the Trump administration.
"Huron University College sees this scholarship as a meaningful attempt to assist worthy students victimized by a policy and a situation beyond their control," the college said. "Huron University College recognizes this is a small gesture in the face of a terrible injustice. While we, as Canadians, cannot affect this American policy, we can nevertheless stand with those who are victimized by it."
